Daily Activities for The Outsiders
As we read The Outsiders, each chapter will have a cooresponding activity.
Day 1: Chapter One and "We'll Make the Rules!" For this activity, you will need to work in a cooperative learning group of three or four people. You will be required to step into the shoes of Soda, Darry and PonyBoy's shoes and make a plan on how you'd survive without parents. Determine a set of house rules. Plan out a week of meals. Anticipate the problems you might have with adult supervision.
Day 2: Chapter Two and "Social Groups!" The Conflict of the Greasers and the Socs is a common one throughout the world (just with different names). As a group, prepare a profile of the teenage social groups in our school. What different types of groups are there? What characteristics do they have? How do they interact with other groups?
Day 3: Chapter Three and "Design a Hang-Out!" The Socs party at the river bottom and the Greasers hang out in a vacant lot. Where would you hang-out if you had a choice? Design your own hang-out.
Day 4: Chapter Four and "Music"! In class, we will listen to songs by artists featured in the novel. In your journal, record what you think of each song. "Burning Love" by Elvis, "Love Me Do" by the Beatles and "I'm so Lonesome".
Day 5: Chapter Five and "Trading Cards": With the index card that I gave you, choose a character and create a card for that character. List six character traits on the back, and illustrate the front.
Day 6: Chapter Six and "The Psychology of Gangs". Why do people join gangs? Are there positive aspects to gang memberships?
Day 7: Chapter seven and "Teen's Problems": List ten of the most critical problems you feel face teens today.
Day 8: Chapter eight and "Plot, Setting, Characterization, Theme and Point of View": We will review these terms in class and apply them to the novel.
Day 9: Chapter nine and "Vocabulary": With the following words, and choose three of the most difficult. Create review cards for each, focusing on an illustration, a connection to your life, and a connection to the world.
Day 10: Chapter ten and "RAFT". Click on the "RAFT" tab on this webquest and create your own RAFT.
